METHODOLOGY

METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is controlled investigation of the theoretical and applied aspects of mathematics, statistics, measurement and the means of gathering and data analyzing data.
RESEARCH APPROACH:  A Quantitative research approach was adopted for the present study.
RESEARCH DESIGN:   The research design used for the present study was One Group Pre and Post Test Design.
 SETTING OF THE STUDY:
The study will be conducted in the selected area (Neurology ward, Orthopedics ward, Surgery ward, immediate medical care (IMC) and Pediatric ward) in Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) Jolly grant, Dehradun, UK.

POPULATION: The population of present study comprises of student nurses of Himalayan college of Nursing, Dehradun, UK.
  SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:
·         SAMPLE: Student nurses posted in selected clinical area at the time of data collection.
·         SAMPLE SIZE: 88
·         SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: Consecutive Sampling Technique was adopted for the present student.

CRITERIA FOR SAMPLE SELECTION:
   INCLUSION CRITERIA:
·         Student nurses who were posted in selected clinical areas in Himalayan hospitals.
·         Student nurses who were present at the time of data collection.
  EXCLUSION CRITERIA:
·         Student nurses who will be working in other areas.
DATA COLLECTION TOOL:  demographic data, knowledge questionnaire and practice checklist were used for the     present study.
DESCRIPTION OF TOOLS: The study tool comprises of three sections:
 SECTION A: Demographic data
It includes information regarding age, gender, clinical area, academic qualification of student nurses.
 SECTION B: Practice checklist
·         Checking hand hygiene practice (washing hands with soap and water & using hand rub).
·         Checking five moments of hand hygiene of the student nurses through practice checklist.
·         Total number of steps are 19 (11 for using soap and water, 8 for using hand rub) for hand hygiene. Each step carries 2 marks for appropriately done, 1 mark for partially done, and 0 mark for not done.
·         Steps of 5 moments of hand hygiene carries 1 marks for done, and 0 marks for not done.

  SECTION C:  knowledge questionnaire
·         Assessment of knowledge and practice regarding hand hygiene of the student nurses.
·         Total number of questions is 20. Each question carries 1 marks for correct answer and the 0 score for wrong answer is considered.
CONTENT VALIDITY: The prepared tools along with the problem statement, objectives and criteria practice checklist  and knowledge questionnaire were given to seven nursing expert to ensure content validity. The experts were from the fields of  microbiology dept., medical -surgical nursing,  child health nursing ,fundamental of nursing .the experts were requested to give their opinion and suggestions  regarding the  adequacy, relevance and appropriateness of content.
PROCEDURE FOR DATA COLLECTION: The data will be collected within the prescribed time period i.e. two weeks in the surgical and critical care units. The data collection was done by following steps:
1.      Ethical committee permission from Himalayan college of nursing Dehradun .
2.      Informed consent from participants was obtained before pretest.
3.      The data was collected from 88 student nurses who were posted in selected clinical area by using practice checklist and knowledge questionnaire.  Collection of demographic data and pretest was done.
4.      After pretest structured teaching programme will be conducted.
5.      Post test will be conducted seven days after teaching.

  DATA COLLECTION:
1.      Pretest and teaching on first day.
2.      Post test after seven days of teaching.
  PLAN FOR DATA ANALYSIS:
Data analysis will be done by descriptive and inferential statistics based on objectives.  A master data sheet was prepared with the responses given by the subjects. Post test would be conducted to find the effectiveness of structured teaching programme. Following statistical test were used for analyzing the data for the present study:
·         We used mean, mode, median, standard deviation formulas for calculate the collected data.
·         Chi square was used to find out the association.
  ETHICAL CONSIDERATION:
The main study will be conducted after the approval of research committee permission will be obtained from the   concerned head of the hospitals. The purpose and after details f the study will be explained to the study subjects and an informed consent will be given to the study subject on the confidentiality of the data collected from them. Information consent will be taken from the student nurses who are willing to participate in this study.
